Food, water, clothing, and shelter are life’s four basic needs. However, in today’s world the need for clean and climate appropriate clothing extends far beyond a simple necessity. Studies show that children who are provided these items improve their self-image, which directly correlates to increased confidence and improved chances of success. Cincinnati has the second highest child poverty rate in the nation, with over half of its children living below the poverty line. This problem isn’t exclusive to downtown, it also extends throughout Cincinnati’s suburban and rural counties.
In late 2017, Give Like a Mother (GLAM) was founded as a materials assistance program focused on providing clothing and hygiene products to impoverished children in our area who not only need clothes to survive, but also to succeed.
In just over two years of operation, Give Like a Mother has grown to provide clothing packs to over 1600 children and families in need of our support, including more than 1100 in 2019 alone! We have accepted over 85,000 articles of donated clothing and last year raised in excess of $50,000 in monetary donations. Although these numbers seem huge, we are just scratching the surface of meeting the need. We have rapidly expanded our facility in Batavia, Ohio to receive more donations and therefore serve more children. We’ve also expanded our reach and focus by partnering with other local nonprofits to serve both the short-term and longer-term needs of these children.
Our success is 100% dependent on donors and volunteers. Although we continue to see a steady flow of gently used clothing, we are quickly identifying other areas of consistent need required to serve more children. Laundry services, storage space, and increased operational costs continue to grow each month and we are always looking for help in these areas. Our immediate needs include:
· Cash donations to help with the increasing costs of serving thousands of children
· Gently used school aged clothing and coats (size 6-18)
· Gym shoes (youth and adult)
· New Socks/Underwear
Give Like a Mother is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization and all donations (including applicable in-kind donations) are tax deductible. Receipts are readily available and monetary donations can be made at www.givelikeamother.com/give-funds.
We greatly appreciate any consideration you would give to helping us. Too often the only adult these children can rely on is you and me, so remember to ‘GIVE LIKE A MOTHER!’
